Modern Poetry: Broaching the Avant-Garde
with Jennifer Svendsen-Delany
A defining aspect of modern poetry is rebellion against tradition or freedom from rules. Moderns emphasize imagination and play, but a thoughtfully crafted modern poem is no less intelligent and refined than its more formal predecessors. Ultimately, what makes a good poem is entirely subjective. The French critic Boileau called the essence of poetry a je-ne-sais-quoi, or an “I don’t know what,” and a powerful poem universally delights or moves. It is a poet’s pleasure to seek and find the right words that convey a feeling or picture. With the right tools, a poet learns to differentiate writing that has impact from personal venting or cliché ramblings. This course encourages imagination while teaching effective editing and master image making.

TESTIMONIAL:

"This (class) was not at all what I expected . . . it was a zillion times better. . . . I felt like I had a private coach! The poet bios were interesting and reading some of their work was very helpful, but by far the most valuable part of the class was your feedback on my poems. The only bad thing is that the class is over! Thanks so much!"
~Karin (student in Modern Poetry - Broaching the Avant-Garde).
"I am a novice at poetry and Floriana has gone above and beyond to communicate personally with me through nearly daily emails . . . This is such a help. Our class is small and the student interaction is low.  Floriana has offered encouragement and suggestions through email.  I don't know about the other students, but I have certainly taken advantage of her helpful offers.  . . ."
